The primary barrier to achieving digital transformation is simply people and culture. Digital transformation doesn’t solely depend on technological advancements; its foundation lies upon mindsets and the evolution of cultural norms. Embracing new technologies and innovative approaches demands not only the acquisition of technical skills but also a fundamental shift in how people perceive and adapt to change. Without a supportive cultural environment and open-minded attitudes, the implementation of new technologies can become a challenge.
In recent times, Many businesses in Ethiopia have been forced into fast digital transformation and the use of digital technologies to enhance business practices and improve user experiences has become an integral part of their business plans. Ethiopia has also designed the Digital Ethiopia 2025 national strategy to transform the country’s national economy through four major sectors: agriculture, tourism, manufacturing, and IT-enabled services.
As we are moving into this next phase of digitalization, we must give equal consideration to fundamental shifts in thinking. Ensuring people have digital access and the same level of digital literacy before implementing technology-dependent projects is a great way to minimize problems in digital transformation. It’s important to remind that only technology is not enough to create a lasting change. A change in mindset is the basis of a successful digital transforamtion. Therefore, we must prioritize changing perspectives and building digital mindsets before implementing nationwide projects centered on technology.
As the world is increasingly connected through digitalization, the government has an opportunity to accelerate the country’s digital transformation by creating supportive digital policies, prioritizing digital inclusion and increasing digital literacy. By focusing on inclusive strategies and fostering a shift in mindset, we can ensure that the benefits of digital transformation are accessible to all members of society. This approach not only mitigates the risk of deepening inequalities but also paves the way for a more sustainable and equitable future.
